The Russian State University of Cinematography named after S.A. Gerasimov (RSIS) is a Federal State Institution of Higher and Postgraduate Education of the Russian Federation.

The RSIS is under the Ministry of Culture of the Russian Federation.

The full name of the University: the Federal State Educational Institution of Higher and Postgraduate Professional Education Russian State University of Cinematography named after Sergei S.A. Gerasimov.

The abbreviated name of the University: All-Russian State University of Cinematography named after S.A. Grasimov, the abbreviation: RSIS.

The official name of the University in English: Russian State University of Cinematography named after S. Gerasimov; the abbreviation: RSIS.

The RSIS was founded on September 1, 1919 in Moscow as the world's first cinema state school that trained directors, cameramen, actors and artists.

The University provides education in the fields of cinema, TV and other screen arts according to the programmes of higher, secondary and further education.

The RSIS works by traditions of professional and highly artistic approach to different fields of screen arts. There is a productive system of study creative art schools at the University. The students get higher or professional secondary education.

The RSIS is a leading sectoral university. RSIS established the Education and Methodics Association of the education institutions of Film and TV Education (EMA). The Chairman of the EMA Council is the Rector of the RSIC, Professor V.S. Malyshev.

The RSIS is the only national state film school, which has the Educational film studio with full work cycle for the production of films and videos.

The RSIS is not only educational, but also a research center. The university departments carry out scientific research. The postgraduate department trains specialists for research and teaching. The science teaching and learning labs contains unique materials on the history and theory of audio-visual arts. The university has more than 214 teachers. These are highly qualified teachers, famous film, theater and television people. Among them: 158 people (74%) hold scientific degree, 50 people (23%) are PhDs and professors, 22 people are folk and popular artists; 49 people are distinguished artists and cultural workers; 27 people are winners of State and international awards; 3 people are full members and corresponding members of the Academy of Arts and APN.

The training is conducted by full-time (in all departments) and distance (in Scenario-film history, Cameramen, Film producing and Economics departments) learning. The University is located in the academic and laboratory buildings equipped with the necessary technological tools and educational supplies and recourses, the training film studio and dormitory.

The main academic building (V. Pika str., 3) contains classrooms for theoretical studies; laboratories to carry out practical work; twelve creative workshops (i.e., small theater venues), eight cinema halls, conference hall for 340 seats, a library, two computer classrooms, two language laboratories, a  printing, a dining room for 100 seats, a gym, a medical center and etc. The Film and video libraries have a large collection of national and foreign films.

The College of film, television and multimedia of the RSIS, the Center for distance learning, the Advanced curses of film and television of the RSIS are at the academic building (Buda str., 3). There is a cinema, computer classrooms, a student cafe.

The RSIS is the only national state film school, which has the Educational film studio with full work cycle for the production of films and videos. The film studio contains five studios, shooting and illumination equipment, costume and stage property room, wig, hair and make-up room, decoration and technical facilities, modern postproduction complex (PPC) designed for film and video production practice in postproduction stage.

The University has the status of a particularly valuable object of cultural heritage of the Russian Federation (Presidential Decree of in 2013).

The RSIS Publishing division publishes books on history and theory of film and about other screen arts. The University publishes academic journal «RSIS’s Bulletin».
