I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University
In 2010 the Setchenov Moscow Medical Academy was reorganized into I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University. The history of the university dates back to distant past of the Elizabeth reign, and it closely connected with the history of the Moscow State University. In 2013 one of the oldest medical universities in the country celebrated 255- year anniversary.
Today the University is the largest educational and scientific complex for training, certification and professional development of medical and pharmaceutical staff. The learning process is closely connected with fundamental and applied scientific research, the provision of high quality medical care, the promotion of medicine and pharmacy. The University is headed by a teaching union of medical and pharmaceutical Russia universities.
Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University includes:
Clinical Center, which combines 7 university hospitals for 3000 patients with a central clinical diagnostic laboratory, 11 laboratories, 7 units of radiology department,16 interclinical diagnostic and treatment services that are able to annually provide treatment to more than 50,000 patients and over 300,000 outpatients, students and staff clinic .
Central Scientific Medical Library, the Museum of the Medicine History, the stadium " Burevestnik", student camp " Sechenovets ", botanical garden, vivarium, 3 dormitories, volunteer center, publishing house .
Scientific research center with more than 40 laboratories, 7 research institutes: RI of Medical Parasitology and Tropical Medicine, RI of Public Health and Healthcare Management, RI of Medical Sociology, Healthcare Economics and Medical Insurance, RI of Phthisiopulmonology, RI of Molecular Medicine, RI of Pharmacy, RI of Uronephrology and Reproductive Health. I.M. Sechenov First MGMU consists of 139 buildings with a total area of over 360 thousand square meters. The University has 20 teaching and medical corps. The university has nearly 15,000 students from Russia and foreign countries. They get training in therapeutic, preventive health and nursing, dentistry, pharmacy and full-time, evening and correspondence courses, distance education.
In accordance with the Charter the University consists of:
10 faculties: Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry, Faculty of Pharmacy, Faculty of Postgraduate, Professional Training of Physicians, Faculty of Preventive Medicine, Faculty of Pediatrics, Faculty of Health Care Management and Economics, Faculty of Preparatory Studies, Faculty of Higher Nursing Training, Psychology and Social Work.
Each year more than 3,000 people are trained on the base of internships, clinical internship and postgraduate for all clinical specialties. About 30 doctoral and 100 master's theses had been defended in 12 specialized councils each year. Up to 13,000 students get 1 year additional education on the cycles of training and retraining.
Duration of study varies from 4 to 6 years, duration of post-graduate education varies from 72 to 1500 hours. For the first time in the history of the country the University opened the Faculty of higher nursing education. In 2001 the University opened a dental Faculty, and in September 2002 began operating a military training center.
The program of pre-university training have been designed and implemented. The university has priorities in the field of development and implementation of new forms of students training with the orientation to a doctor and a pharmacist profession. The formation of the system of pre-university training is completed.
In 2011 the University restored Educational and Methodological Association on medical and pharmaceutical education institutions of Russia. Chairman of Association is corresponding member of the Academy of Medical Sciences, Professor, MD P.V. Glybochko.
Nowadays the University has agreements on pre-university training with 11 secondary schools, including 8 comprehensive schools, 2 gymnasiums (Ramenskoye and Tula), 1 lyceum (Mytishchi). The total number of students is about 600 people.
There are 160 departments and courses in the University, which employ nearly 2,000 highly qualified specialists. Teachers with a doctorate degree and Ph.D. constitute 86.5 % (600 doctors and 1,000 PhDs) . 100 university scientists - Academicians and Corresponding Members of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences, the Russian Academy of Education, 60 honored Worker of Science, 56 distinguished physicians and honored workers of Health, 44 honored workers of Higher School of Russia, 88 winners of the State and other Russian awards; 191 employees are members of international academies.
The Academic Council (180 people) carries the general management on education, research and clinical activities of the University elected by a team of University among the faculty and students for a period of 5 years. The Scientific Council adopts the Charter and local acts regulating the activities of the University.
At the monthly meetings of the Academic Council the most important issues of collective life are discussed. Among them there are questions of perspective development of the University, improvement of the educational process, health care, scientific research and educational work. Great attention is paid to the annual report of the rector. The joint meeting of the Academic Council and the Presidium of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences is held.

The Clinical Campus of I.M. Sechenov First MSMU was founded in 1987 and is recognized as one of the world’s best. It is not only an inimitable architectural center and a famous historical landmark, but also a unique center where future doctors study, physicians continue medical education, scientists carry out research, the most difficult patients receive specialized high-tech medical care.
Establishment of the Clinical Campus is a remarkable milestone of the Russian medicine and medical education. First hospitals (Psychiatry, and Obstetrics and Gynecology) were built from merchants’ donations. Later on within five next years the University obtained magnificent buildings of thirteen hospitals and two institutes.
Clinics and interclinical departments carry out research on the development and introduction of new methods of diagnosis and treatment, testing of drugs and medical equipment . University Hospitals have the highly qualified staff, wide range of X-ray (including angiography and computed tomography) research, strong laboratory service, the service of functional diagnostics, endoscopic and ultrasound diagnostics, Department of Medical Genetics. These facilities offer outstanding opportunities for scientific research, new forms and methods of modern medical technology.
Successfully operate six scientific and methodical center of Ministry of Health of Russia - Somnology, Nephrology, Clinical laboratory, Scientific and educational center of the Analytical Toxicology, Moscow Special (medical specialties) Center of New Information Technologies, etc. The university collaborates with various international organizations. Academy specialists are experts and consultants of the World Health Organization. The university established the WHO Collaborating Centers on Higher Nursing and Midwifery, tuberculosis and the three-day malaria.
The university is a member of the International Association of Universities. On the basis of direct agreements and treaties university cooperates with universities from the U.S.A., Germany, Norway, the Netherlands and others. The University sends abroad more than 300 employees and receives about 100 foreign specialists, actively conducts students exchanges. High rating among universities in the competitions hold by UNESCO is the evidence of a large international University reputation.
