The University chronicle starts in 1932 with the foundation of Dirigible Engineering Educational Centre attached to Civil Air Fleet (CAF) Ministry by joining Aircraft School of Leningrad Institute of CAF Engineers and Moscow Aviation Institute. In 1937 the Centre was reorganised into Moscow Institute of CAF Engineers. On June 17, 1940 Moscow Aviation Technology Institute (or shortly MATI) was created on the basis of the later. MATI attained the university status in 1992 - a recognition of both the scale and quality of its courses.
Today the University is one of the leading Russian technical universities where highly skilled experts in the field of advanced materials and high technologies are trained. Among the University teaching staff there are Academicians and Corresponding Fellows of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Russian Engineering Academy, the Russian Academy of Technological Sciences and the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences. There are also Lenin and State Prize Winners, Honoured research and engineering workers of the Russian Federation. Furthermore, about 176 Professors and Doctors of Sciences as well as more than 538 Associate Professors and Candidates of Science (Ph.D.) work at the University.
The University disposes of a comfortable dormitory for 1500 students and library of more than 900,000 volumes of manuals, journals and other educational and scientific literature. Student's theatre and other cultural and sport centres and facilities are available too. Since 1974 International Gagarin Student's Scientific Reedings are held every year in April. During this conference participants meet astronauts and prominent scientists in the field of aerospace science and engineering.
In 1991 University was opened for the foreign students. More than 1500 students from 20 countries graduated from MATI since that time. Now students from the UK, USA, Germany, Holland, Turkey, Myanmar, Iran, India, South Korea, Vietnam, China and other countries are studying at the University.
