The University chronicle starts in 1932 with the foundation of Dirigible Engineering Educational Centre attached to Civil Air Fleet (CAF) Ministry by joining Aircraft School of Leningrad Institute of CAF Engineers and Moscow Aviation Institute. In 1937 the Centre was reorganised into Moscow Institute of CAF Engineers. On June 17, 1940 Moscow Aviation Technology Institute (or shortly MATI) was created on the basis of the later. MATI attained the university status in 1992 - a recognition of both the scale and quality of its courses.

The Choral Arts Academy named after V.S. Popov is a musical educational institution in Moscow. The Academy was established by Victor Popov in the early 1990s on the basis of the Choral School named after A.V. Sveshnikov, which was founded in 1944 by A.V. Sveshnikov. At present the Choir School is a part of the Academy. The Academy training course includes three stages: school, college and university. Graduates get diplomas in two specialties: “Conducting” and “Vocal art”. Since 1992, the University accepts girls. In 1995, 200 students attended the Academy, 66 of them studied at the University. In 1996, the postgraduate department and the assistantship were approved by the Academy.  

The D. Mendeleev University of Chemical Technology of Russia (MUCTR) is one of the oldest and most famous universities in the country. It was founded in 1880 as a technical school. The University trains specialists in the field of industrial facilities, research and educational institutions, state government bodies as well as in the sphere of innovative business structures. Distinctive features of this school is fundamentality and wide profile of training, a variety of forms of organization of the educational process, the successful combination of teaching and research activities of the University. At present the MUCTR keeps the leading positions among technical universities of Russia and has the highest rating among the chemical technological universities in the country. The University has received worldwide recognition as one of the leading teaching and research centers that provide training of highly qualified personnel.

Financial University has always been famous for the quality of professional education it provided. For many decades our graduates have been the core and elite of the country’s financial and economic system. Among them are finance ministers and deputy finance ministers of the USSR and Russia, politicians, academics, businessmen, heads of state and commercial banks, industrial and financial companies, rectors of major foreign universities.

Their success and achievements are the best evidence of the Financial University’s authority, quality and competitiveness of its training programs.

A group of the Academy alumni initiated a decision to set up an endowment fund with all its revenues to be used to finance the institution development programs, to improve its facilities, implement various innovative projects, enhance the quality of education, and so on.

The Chairman of the Endowment Fund’s Board of Trustees is A.L. Kudrin, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance of the Russian Federation.

Today the Financial University is the largest educational and research complex, one of Russia’s leading educational and research centers in the fields of finance, credit, financial management, insurance, taxes and taxation, accounting, analysis and audit, international economic relations, risk analysis, crisis management, mathematical methods in economics, public and municipal administration, law and political science. 

The Financial University comprises a whole network of regional branches – affiliates and representative offices as well as finance and economics colleges. The annual number of students at the University is more than 30 thousand, with dozens of thousands of specialists taking professional development courses.

Practical orientation of education is particularly important for an economist today. That is why the University places special emphasis on engaging experienced practitioners in the capacity of lecturers. Heads of banks, insurance and audit companies as well as major financial and industrial structures work with our students.

Gubkin University was founded in 1930 by the outstanding scientist, honored worker of science and technology of the RSFSR academician Ivan Mikhailovich Gubkin. For almost a century Gubkin University has trained more than 90,000 diploma engineers, candidates and doctors of science. The University is proud of its graduates working in all major oil and gas Russian and foreign companies. A lot of cities, enterprises, institutions, scientific research ships, the largest deposits of oil and gas are named after the names of University staff and alumni. Today Gubkin Russian State University of Oil and Gas is a modern innovative university, one of the flagships of higher technical education in Russia. In 2010 the University received the status of “National Research University” (NRU).

In 2010 the Setchenov Moscow Medical Academy was reorganized into I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University. The history of the university dates back to distant past of the Elizabeth reign, and it closely connected with the history of the Moscow State University. In 2013 one of the oldest medical universities in the country celebrated 255- year anniversary. Today the University is the largest educational and scientific complex for training, certification and professional development of medical and pharmaceutical staff. The learning process is closely connected with fundamental and applied scientific research, the provision of high quality medical care, the promotion of medicine and pharmacy. The University is headed by a teaching union of medical and pharmaceutical Russian universities.

Kutafin Moscow State Law Academy has been specified as a model of an institution of higher education in the region. Since its foundation the Academy has grown to become the University. Today it trains around 17,000 students; delivering courses that provide deep knowledge of the subject matters and relevant practical skills; making efforts to improve the law and legal institutions through teaching, research, and other forms of public service. Kutafin Moscow State Law University is the core institution of Legal Education Alliance that contributed significantly to the establishing of Educational and Methodological Organization within the purview of law. Kutafin Moscow State Law University assured training and graduation of more than 180 thousand specialists of higher legal education.

One of the oldest Russian institutions of higher education, Moscow University was established in 1755. In 1940 it was named after Academician Mikhail Lomonosov (1711 - 1765), an outstanding Russian scientist, who greatly contributed to the establishment of the university in Moscow. Moscow State University is a major traditional educational institution in Russia, it offers training in almost all branches of modern science and humanities. Its undergraduates may choose one of 128 qualifications in its 39 faculties, while post-graduate students may specialize in 18 branches of science and humanities and in 168 different areas. The total number of MSU students exceeds 40,000; besides, about 10,000 high school students attend various clubs and courses at MSU. Various kinds of academic courses and research work are conducted at MSU Museums, affiliated subdivisions in various locations in Russia, on board scientific ships etc.


The Maxim Gorky Literature Institute is an institute of higher education, founded in 1933 on the initiative of Maxim Gorky. The Institute received the present name in 1936. Since 1942, it trains full-time and part-time students. The Institute provides Advanced Literature Courses since 1953. In 1983, the Institute was awarded the Order of Peoples’ Friendship. Since 1992, the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation is in charge of the supervision over the Institute. Due to the interaction of the educational process, creatively gifted young people, famous writers and memorials associated with the biggest literary names our unique educational institution turns to be a the center of historical memory and living, intense and creative development.

Moscow Architectural Institute (State Academy) - MARCHI has got a 250-years history. It is the leading architecture school in Russia. It was founded by the Russian Federation, and the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation has the powers of the founder of the Institute. For decades the MARCHI prepares highly qualified architects for architecture schools of Russia and the CIS countries. MARCHI has links with many architecture and artistic institutions of higher education abroad.

The School-Studio at the Moscow Art Theatre is a state educational institution. The full name of the Institute: the Institute of Higher Education School-Studio named after V.I. Nemirovich-Danchenko at the Moscow Art Theatre named after A.P. Chekhov. The former name (1943-1989) is the Institute of Higher Education School-studio named after Nemirovich-Danchenko at the Moscow Art Theatre of the USSR named after M. Gorky.

Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI) was founded in 1930 when institutions which specialized in aviation became advanced enough to join into one aircraft engineering education center. The present-day MAI is a unique institute of higher education where a thorough theoretical knowledge combines with various practical skills. More than 120 laboratories, 3 student design offices, numerous computer centers, an experimental-design factory, and an aerodrome are available for our students. In 1993 Moscow Aviation Institute was given one more name: “State Technological University”. Until the present, the development of Russian aeronautics and astronautics was based mostly on the activities of institute professors and alumnus.

Moscow Institute of Physical culture and Sport is the first Russian on-profit educational institution of sport profile. The institute was established in 1999 and operates under a license issued by the R.F Federal Service for Supervision in Education and Science and State Accreditation.

The Moscow Institute of Physics and Technology is the leading institute of higher education of the Russian Federation, training highly-qualified specialist in various areas of modern science and technology. The institute has a rich history. Its founders and early staff members were Nobel Prize winners P.L Kapitsa, N.N Semenov, and L.D. Landau. Nobel Prize winners are among its graduates as well. Many Fiztech professors are leading scientists in Russia, among which are more than 80 academics and corresponding members of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The Moscow State Academy of Choreography (MSAC) is the oldest theatrical school in Moscow. The Founding Home was established per the Order of the Empress Catherine II of Russia in 1763. The first "Dance Classes" were started there in 1773. The first graduation was in 1779. Later on the classes were transferred under the supervision of the Petrovsky Theater (1784) and under the supervision of the Moscow Board of the Imperial Theaters (1806) and therefore the MSAC was reorganized into the Moscow Imperial Theater School.

The Academy  is one of the oldest universities in Russia, founded in 1919 in Moscow. The Academy is a training, research and production campus. We offer the best in basic and advanced research opportunities as well as specialized training in animal research and biotechnology, merchandising, marketing, and technology of food and animal products. Each year, the Academy trained more than 4000 students, graduate students and applicants are training more than 300 veterinary specialists. Research School Academy and their representatives have been widely accepted in domestic and foreign veterinary, zootechnical and biological science.

Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory is higher musical education institution in Moscow, one of the leading music schools in Russia and in the world. The Conservatory includes the Conservatory Scientific music library named after Sergei Taneyev (one of the largest music libraries of Russia), Laboratory of sound recordings ("music library", since 1947), Scientific Publishing Center "Moscow Conservatory", Museum of Nikolai Rubinstein, an opera studio, post-graduate courses, the sector of teaching practice on the base of evening musical ten-year school, Computer center, Research departments (institutions): Problem Research Laboratory, Research Center for Church Music named after Archpriest Dimitry Razumovsky, Research Center of Folk Music named after KV Kvitki, Research methodology center of historical musicology, Scientific and creative center of modern music.

Moscow State Forest University (MSFU) is a leading multi-discipline higher forest educational institution in Russia. It was founded in 1919. Together with forest-related specialties, the University trains Bachelors, Masters of Science and Specialists in various fields including computer and information systems as well as economics. MSFU has long and close cooperation with many corresponding educational and scientific institutions in Bulgaria, China, Finland, France, Germany, Great Britain, Iran, Mongolia, Montenegro, Serbia, USA, Vietnam and others. It has been educating international students through various educational and research programmes.

World famous scientific schools in fundamental and applied research were born and work today at the University. Hundreds of highly qualified specialists, academicians, doctors and candidates of sciences deliver lectures and carry out research work. The University comprises: 10 faculties, 58 departments, 5 scientific research institutes, a tree-nursery in Schelkovo, branch of international institute of trade and investment in forest complex, 29 branches of departments in the enterprises, 2 certificate centres, postgraduate study and doctorate, International School of Business and Management.

The Moscow State Linguistics University (MSLU) is one of the most dynamically developing universities in Russia. It is in the top 10 classical universities of Russia and the leader in providing language education. The MSLU is the center of education, science and culture. The University trains bachelor, master and specialist degree specialists  with knowledge of two languages according to various specialties and directions: "Practice and Theory of Translation", "International Relations", "Public Relations and PR", "Journalism", "Political Science", "Social Science", "Psychology", "Theology", "Economics", "Law", "Document and Archival Science", "IT Security" and etc.
