Undergraduate education-Specialist's degree

Undergraduate education Specialist’s degree

In Russia, the new two-stage education form has been approved since September 2009. In 1996, bachelor’s and master’s degrees were already approved by the law as the levels of training and were considered as higher education which was alternative to traditional one.

Initially, the Bologna model of education required only two higher education qualifications: “bachelor” and “master”. But this is not consistent with the traditional Soviet one-stage education system. Therefore, at this moment in Russia there is, properly speaking, three stages of higher education:

Separation of curricula affected primarily humanities. The exception was done for medical, military and technical higher education institutes, as they maintained length of training for 5-6 years. Furthermore, the number of specialties of higher education institutions were reduced over reforms (about 50 courses of undergraduate and 200 of master levels).

The reduction was done through joining small specialties in general courses. For instance, bachelor’s students of Economics get a diploma without specialization. Education in Russia follows the system "4 +2" or 5 years. In future, a transition to a 3-year bachelor's degree may take place as well. However, this process is directly related to the duration of studying at secondary schools up to 12 years.

The first level, undergraduate, provides training in basic courses without giving specialization. Such diploma allows to hold ordinary positions in industry and economy. Professional, in-depth specialization will be available only within the second level of education - a master's degree and specialty. In addition, this education level provides an access to scientific work and post-graduate programmes.
